BLACKPINK Jennie is building her own empire in the K-pop industry.

Long before BLACKPINK debuted, Jennie already caught people’s eyes after the official blog of YG Entertainment uploaded a photo of her through the teaser Who’s that girl? In 2012. At that time, she became the most searched topic under the name Mystery Girl.

A few months later, the agency dropped a video of her covering B.o.B song, Strange Clouds. Her visuals and talent also secured spots for her in several music videos by YG Entertainment artists. She unceasingly piqued people’s curiosity until BLACKPINK’s debut in 2016.

While the girl group already has a soaring career, Jennie also establishes her own kingdom through her solo activities.

BLACKPINK Jennie Dominates YouTube with SOLO

On Thursday, Jennie’s music video for her solo debut song, SOLO, reached the 800 million views mark on YouTube. The figure led the K-pop idol to become the first K-pop female solo act whose music video reached the milestone.

Jennie released it on Nov. 12, 2018, and it took the song three years, four months, and four days to reach 800 million views.

The same music video set other records, including the most liked music video by a Korean female soloist and the first dance choreography video by a Korean soloist to hit 200 million views on YouTube.

On iTunes, SOLO is the first song by a Korean female act to hit No. 1 on the Worldwide iTunes and the first song by a Korean female soloist to chart in the US iTunes’ top 10.

The same piece also made records on Spotify, Korean Chart Records, and Billboard records.

What SOLO Means to Jennie

During her press conference as part of the release of the single, Jennie held a press conference in Platform-L Contemporary Art Center, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. At that time, she explained what kind of song SOLO is.

“When you’re dating someone, you tend to present what the other person wants rather than your true self. I wanted to express that feeling. Rather than the heart wound coming from a breakup, I wanted to express myself more freely,” she said.

After debuting as a soloist, Jennie pledged she would always give 100 percent of herself at all times – and she always does so.
