Damon and Affleck have been good friends for decades. They were already best friends even before they made it big in Hollywood.
The Martian star witnessed Affleck's courtship, breakup, and marriage to Lopez. He admitted that their romance wasn't smooth and it nearly ended Affleck's acting career.
He said that Affleck remaining with Lopez was "proof that he stayed in that relationship for the right reasons. Because he knew it was killing his career," Koimoi reported.
He added:
"He knew it. And people would say, ‘Oh, you’re courting the press!’ Why the f*** would he want to court that kind of press?"
In the same interview, Damon defended his pal, noting that the amount of unwanted attention given to Affleck due to his romance with Lopez amounted to a negative form of publicity. His every move was reportedly tracked, analyzed and judged.
He added, per FandomWire:
"If you end up in their crosshairs, you’re really f*ked. Because there is an absolute relationship between how f**ked you are, if you’re on the cover of their magazines, and what happens to you as an actor. I mean, nobody knows that more than Ben."
Damon said that he would not feed on the Bennifer discussions. According to him, he regularly talks to Affleck but they don't talk about personal matters and he will not comment on Affleck and Lopez's relationship.
"I talk to him every day, but we don’t talk about personal stuff, we just talk about the movie. There’s not enough liquor in the world for you to get me to say something about that."

Even if Damon doesn't want to fuel the flame about various discussions surrounding the Bennifer reunion, he once spoke about his support for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez.
When the Batman star and Marry Me actress reunited in 2021 after she canceled her engagement to Alex Rodriguez, Damon was asked about their reconciliation and he gave them his blessing.
Damon was seemingly unaware of the Bennifer reunion at the time as he told Today, it was "the first time" he had heard about it. Nevertheless, he said this per Grazia:
"It's a fascinating story. I hope it's true. I love them both. That would be awesome."
