Batman: The Killing Joke Animated Movie Officially Gets R Rating

Batman: The Killing Joke is no joke.

According to EW, the studio's home entertainment division has said that the Warner Bros.' upcoming direct-to-video animated film has been given an R rating.

The movie will be the first R-rated film in the DC Universe Original Movie franchise and the second Batman film to receive the rating. The first Batman movie that received an R-rating was the home-video Ultimate Cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Based on the Alan Moore comic of the same title, Batman: The Killingstars the voice ofStar Warsactor Mark Hamill as the Joker, Kevin Conroy as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Tara Strong as Batgirl/Barbara Gordon.

The Killing Joke tells the origin story of the Joker mocking Batman by kidnapping and torturing Batgirl.

There's a strong possibility that Barbara Gordon's scene with the Joker is also the reason why the extended home-video version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is Rated R. It has been reported that there will be a "fleeting nude figure" in the R-rated Dawn of Justice version. If this is true, Batgirl, who is believed to be portrayed by Jena Malone, could be meeting Jared Leto's Joker, and expect the scene to be graphic.

Just take a look at the original comic:

Published in 1988, the original The Killing Joke comic has been hailed as misogynistic and it remains polarizing to this day.

Batman: The Killing Joke will be making a world premiere at the San Diego International Comic-Con this summer.
