Last year, Sony announced that Grammy-winning rapper Bad Bunny is set to star in the Spider-Verse film El Muerto for a planned 2024 release. He would have been the first Latino to lead a live-action Marvel movie.

While there was some excitement about the idea of the hit artist's involvement in the Spider-Verse, the character is also unfamiliar to both the audience and most comic book readers since he only showed up in two issues and was never part of the pantheon of iconic Spider-Man villains.

As time passed and the project remained stuck in development despite having a writer and director attached, fans started to wonder whether the project was still happening as it was nowhere near the production stage.

It also doesn't help that the current writers' strike has stopped its development and Bad Bunny himself is also busy as a recording artist which resulted in Sony pulling it off from its release calendar. There was even a rumor that the rapper was no longer attached to the project.

Now, we finally have the answer and it looks like the fans' suspicion has been right all along regarding the rapper's involvement in the film.

Vanity Fair confirmed through an interview with Bad Bunny that he is no longer attached to star in Sony's El Muerto movie.

When asked about his involvement in the project and why the development was stuck in limbo, the rapper hesitated at first. He then replied, "I don’t know what to say," and called the issue "delicate."

The rapper's publicist, Sujeylee Solá, chimed in and confirmed her client's exit from the project. "Obviously, it’s out," she said.

Given the lack of progress on the project since the hiring of the writer and director late last year and the studio taking it off from the release calendar, it's not surprising to hear about Bad Bunny's exit from the film and perhaps it happened sometime before the current strikes happened.

He also has a very busy schedule at the moment and it would be difficult for his team and Sony to work out a way for him to commit to doing the film while still having his day job as a recording artist.

It sounded like the rapper was also disappointed about the fate of his involvement in the project and it's interesting to see if he'll take another shot at being part of a comic book movie franchise.

It is unknown yet whether Sony will continue to develop the project and hire a new actor to take over the role or just pull the plug together since it was always intended as a Bad Bunny vehicle from the very beginning. It wouldn't be shocking if the latter would happen very soon.
