Classroom of the Elite’s Kiyotaka Ayanokoji is a genius in most things, as he’s an expert in all sorts of tasks that require smarts. This makes sense considering his upbringing in the White Room.

While not exactly shown in the anime, Ayanokoji is also a genius in chess. This is based on Arisu Sakayanagi’s background.

During Sakayanagi’s younger days, she visited the White Room along with her father. There, she discovered that Ayanokoji was able to defeat everyone in chess.

Because of this, Sakayanagi vowed to defeat anyone in the White Room, including Ayanokoji. This is so that she can prove her superior DNA, as she believes that a person’s abilities are determined by their genetics.

Sakayanagi is also a noted chess prodigy as her abilities mean she can compete at the national level in the sport.

Thus, many fans are excited to see the match between Ayanokoji and Sakayanagi, which was hinted at in the season 3 episode 9 ending.

Ayanokoji and Sakayanagi don’t exactly have a 1-on-1 chess match. Instead, they served as the commanders, with Masayoshi Hashimoto and Suzune Horikita representing Class A and D, respectively.

As commanders can help the representatives, the match essentially turns into a chess duel between Ayanokoji and Sakayanagi.

The two proved to be evenly matched, and while Ayanokoji played nearly perfectly, it was Sakayanagi who won in the end after sacrificing her queen.

While Sakayanagi officially won, it turns out that Tokinari Tsukishiro tampered with the match, changing Ayanokoji’s move.

Because of this, Sakayanagi asked Ayanokoji for an unofficial rematch, which Ayanokoji won.

These events will be shown in the final episodes of Classroom of the Elite season 3. The show’s 10th episode will be released next week.
