Anime adaptations of ongoing manga series are common, but this new anime might just be one to watch out for. Recently, it was revealed that the award-winning fantasy manga Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is getting an anime adaptation.

The anime was initially revealed in a listing on the Animate website (via Anime News Network). After this, an official announcement was made via the show's new Twitter account and website.

Specifically, the Japanese listing on Animate for the series’ ninth volume revealed that the manga is getting an anime series adaptation soon.

Meanwhile, the anime announcement tweet featured the first key visual for the show.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a fantasy manga series written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. It is serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday, and it began serialization on April 28, 2020, and has since gotten nearly 100 chapters.

This fantasy manga is unique as, unlike other series where a group of adventurers goes on a quest to defeat an evil force, Frieren follows a group that has already vanquished a mighty foe.

The story follows Frieren, an elven mage who is a former member of a party of adventurers that defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land.

She was joined in the party by the human hero Himmel, dwarven warrior Eisen, and the human priest Heite.

After defeating the Demon King, Frieren travels the world to pursue more magical knowledge, and the party promises to meet again in the capital after 50 years.

Years pass and finally, Frieren returns to the capital and finds that her companions have grown old. As an elf, Frieren has a long lifespan, meaning she’ll outlive all her friends from the party.

Soon, Himmel dies of old age, and in response, Frieren sets out to fulfill the last request of her other party member.

Given Frieren’s long life, the series takes place over a long time. This unique premise was well-received among fans and critics alike.

Aside from getting great reviews, Frieren is also a hit sales-wise as the series has over 6 million copies in circulation as of June 2022.

On top of these, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End was awarded the Grand Prize in the 14th Manga Taisho awards. Creators Yamada and Abe were also awarded the New Creator Prize at the 2021 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

The manga’s ninth volume is set to release in Japan on September 15, 2022. In the US, VIZ Media publishes the work in English.

As for the Frieren anime, there are no details yet regarding its studio, cast, or release date.
