Avengers: Infinity War Has a Great Steppingstone with Captain America: Civil War

Fans of Captain America—and of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, really—can safely say that Captain America: Civil Warwas one of the best movies in the Marvel Grand Plan.

Apart from seeing our favorite heroes go head-to-head with each other, there was also a lot of emotions involved, since the cast is not only the big ensemble to date, they have also come to grow with its viewers. Perhaps even to the point that you may have doubted your allegiance once or twice during the movie.

That was one of the many highlights that Captain America: Civil War had offered, and from the looks of it, brothers Joe and Anthony Russo will be taking that and more once they get to the directors' seats of Avengers: Infinity War.

Speaking to IGN, the Russo brothers shared their thoughts about how the things and techniques that they've done in Captain America: Civil War. For instance, the brothers' talent for ensemble storytelling was highlighted when the duo was able to deliver the stories of the many characters in the movie.

Even with the numerous cast, Anthony pointed out that the important thing was to make sure that every screen time for the character counted. We definitely felt that when Tom Holland came web-slinging into the scene as Spider-Man. Or even in the way Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther exuded a regal atmosphere each time he was on scene really made you feel that he's the King of Wakanda.

The good news is the Russo brothers will be taking this practice to their next movie.

"That's part of what we love about our Marvel work as well, so the fact that we get to carry that process forward into Avengers: Infinity War, and not only carry it forward but at a scale and a scope that we've never even attempted before in those films, because those films are so much intended to be a culmination of everything that's unfolded in the MCU up until this point."

What's more, it's not just going to be about a big ensemble, but also a more fine-tuned way of "balancing" characters. Basically, even though some very powerful players are in there, like Vision and Scarlet Witch, they each have their own emotional baggage that interplay with the movie's narrative and the fight scenes.

"That's really how we do it is these characters not only have their abilities, but they have an emotional life and a psychology that is as important to everything they do as their abilities are."

I'm all for that last statement from Anthony. When it comes to superheroes, it's easy to get lost in the wonders of epic fights, leveled buildings, and decimated landscapes. What's easily forgotten is the fact that they each have their own version of humanity (or spark, or instinct, whatever you may call Vision's soul and purpose) that propels every action.

That's what Captain America: Civil War put on the table: heroes who have their own biases, motivations, interests, and beliefs. And those are basically some major things that I think shook the Avenger's Empire as a whole and paved the way to a divided front.

If that's how the Russo brothers delivered Captain America: Civil War, I can't wait to see how they plan on upping the ante for Avengers: Infinity War. The third Avengers movie is set to premiere in theaters on April 25, 2018.
