Thanos Story Will Make Him Like the Darth Vader of Marvel Universe

When a ThanosMarvel Now!standalone series was first announced, writer Jeff Lemire (Animal Man, Sweet Tooth) had hinted that they will take on a unique perspective in writing the series, since it will be from the point of view of a villain.

Lemire had already hinted before that it can play well into the Marvel Universe. Now, the writer has also hinted that Thanos will delve deeper into the psyche of the villain as well as his relationships in his own family.

Speaking to Comicbook Resources, Lemire revealed that the idea for Thanos has steadily grown, following years of superhero stories. Thanos provides a break not only for the universe, but also a challenge for the writer to take on a new perspective.

"The awareness of Thanos is growing because of his involvement in the Cinematic Universe. There is a great potential to have an audience for this book and still do something cool. The character himself, he is pretty well god-like, and for me that can either be pretty uninteresting or it can be fascinating. When you have that much power, what compels you? What motivates you? What do you want? When I started asking myself those questions, I started to build a story, and when I started answering them, that's what the story explores."

More than the psyche-delving questions, Lemire had also looked into the roles of the family dynamics between Thanos and members like Gamora and Starfox. For Lemire, this layer had made what could be an uninteresting story of a god-like alpha-villain into a more complicated approach that could compare to Darth Vader's journey.

"…but at the heart of it, it's very small, character-driven stories. That's how I want "Thanos" to be, too. It's his journey, but it's also the journey of Thane and Starfox and other characters, and their relationship with Thanos."

Even though other characters will be touched on in Thanos, don't expect crossovers with other Marvel series like Extraordinary X-Men. For Lemire, this is a good thing, since it allows for more exploration of the rest of the Marvel Universe.

Thanosfor Marvel Now! will arrive this fall. Lemire will be collaborating with artist Mike Deodato for the series.
