Avengers: Infinity War Directors Clarify Their Soul Stone Statement

Fans were pleasantly surprised when Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of Avengers: Infinity War, confirmed a fan theory about the Soul Stone. It was an easy enough theory for fans to put together, especially if they read Jim Starlin's Adam Warlock series, so having the directors give it some credibility was somewhat mind-blowing.

So it's a bit sad to see The Russo Brothers take back their statement. Admittedly, they don't completely throw parts of the theory away since the Soul Stone was still at work but it's still disappointing.

During an interview with ComicBook.com, the Infinity War directors clarified their original statement about Gamora's soul being in the Infinity Stone. The directing duo stated that when he snapped his fingers and wiped out half of the universe, he entered the ethereal plane of the Soul Stone and saw a spiritual representation of young Gamora.

"The power that it took Thanos to click his fingers, he's so dramatic that if you look closely at the film and the damage of the gauntlet. "You look closely at the very last scene, it damages his arm dramatically. And that moment when he clicks his fingers sends him into this ethereal plane inside of the Soul Stone where as part of his quote unquote hero's journey in the film, he has one last moment to convey a sense of guilt about what he's done. It illustrates what a complicated character he is. So, to clarify, it's a spiritual representation of her and obviously that's something that the Soul Stone has power to do. But really it's there to illustrate his pain and his guilt. I wouldn't read much more into it beyond that."

Both directors are also sticking with their guns about the various deaths, claiming that they're all real. This is hard to believe since Spider-Man and The Guardians of the Galaxy have confirmed sequels but it is a good way to stop spoilers from coming out. At the least, fans are desperate to know what happens in the next Avengers film.

Avengers: Infinity War is now showing. Avengers 4 comes out on May 3, 2019.
