Joe Russo Confirms Avengers: Infinity War Fan Theory

Ever since fans watched Avengers: Infinity War and witnessed its ending, fans have been coming up with theories faster than Quicksilver's prominence in the MCU. It's rare when one of them gets confirmed by the directors, so the fact that co-director Joe Russo confirmed this spoilerific theory should get fans talking.

Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War

During a Q and A covered by MCU Exchange, Joe Russo was asked if Gamora's soul was inside the Soul Stone since Thanos killed her to get it. Add the odd vision he got after snapping his fingers that erased half of the universe and it's easy to see why fans came up with this theory.

To the surprise of many, Russo confirmed the theory, stating that it was done to give Thanos some depth. Throughout the film, it's made obvious that he really cared for Gamora, even preferring her over his other daughter Nebula, who he didn't kill because it was a "waste of parts." His anguish over killing Gamora was heartfelt, though some accused The Russos of fridging Gamora so that it serves as an emotional conflict for both Thanos and Star-Lord.

Joe Russo: Yeah it's- it's implied it's the soul stone. It's all orange around, then he's inside the soul stone with the amount of power that it took to snap his fingers- he has this out of body experience with Thanos. When he goes inside the Soul stone he has this kind of conversation with the younger version of his Gamora.
Q: So she's there?
Joe Russo:She's in fact, yes. It was an attempt an attempt on our part- because we don't like two-dimensional roles or three-dimensional villains every villain is a hero in their own story and as insane and psychotic and brutal and violent as Thanos is he's a more complex villain if you go on a journey with him emotionally. He does care about things and it is complicated for him to execute his plan and it cost him something. He said at the end "It cost him everything" and that it was the only thing he loved which was Gamora which is why we put him back with her at the end. I just want to reiterate with the audience that he does feel true emotion even though he is a monster.

Now that we know Gamora's soul is in there, does that mean the other characters who vanished are there too? That seems possible and would make sense since it is the soul stone. When Adam Warlock had it in the comics, he could feel the anguish of the souls he absorbed. Will Thanos do the same? Only time will tell.

Avengers: Infinity War is now showing in theaters.
