Joe Russo Explains Why Thor Didn’t (Spoiler) In Avengers: Infinity War

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) might have had the chance to kill Thanos when he finally had the chance during the very of end of Avengers: Infinity War, but the Mad Titan ended up decimating half of the universe with a snap of his finger in the crossover film.

Though rationally speaking the Russo brothers had to keep Thanos alive "because then there would be no Avengers 4," Joe Russo says that Thor didn't kill the Mad Titan because he wanted payback for everything Thanos stole from him.

Speaking in an interview with Comic Book, Joe explained that Marvel fans should be just as angry at Thor for not killing Thanos as they are at Star-Lord (Chris Hemsworth).

"I would argue that the fan base could be equally upset with Thor, who chose to throw that ax into Thanos chest and not his head. Because he wanted to tell Thanos that he got his revenge. Had he gone for a kill shot, that snap would not have happened. These are choices that characters who are feeling immense pain make and hopefully, the audience can learn to empathize with those characters because they can grow through stories. Stories can teach us things and that we should try to see every choice from the perspective of the character that made the choice."

Some fans, however, would still argue that Thor did all that he could, driving his ax right into Thanos' chest. Maybe Thor made a mistake thinking an ax to the chest would be enough. Maybe it was a plot device. Thor's actions, however, don't seem as terrible as Peter Quill's.

We wonder what Thor and the rest of the Avengers might do to undo Thanos' massacre in Avengers 4.
