Avengers: Endgame Director Comments on James Cameron Saying Avatar Sequels Will be Bigger

There is little doubt that Avengers: Endgame is currently the biggest billion-dollar film of all time but that honor once belonged to Avatar. Nevertheless, James Cameron is hopeful that the Avatar sequels will be more successful than the original flick. Interestingly, Endgame co-director Joe Russo has learned about Cameron's comments and he has a delightful response to that.

Cameron had previously stated that the success of Endgame has convinced him that Avatar 2 and the other sequels will be bigger than the 2009 movie. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Russo admitted that he has heard about the comments and stated that he is a huge fan of Cameron's.

"He was a huge influence on us growing up. We always say the script for Aliens is the template for most modern filmmaking. It spawned an era of commercial movies that owe their DNA and lineage to that script. He's the godfather of modern commercial cinema along with [Steven] Spielberg and [George] Lucas," Russo said.

But how does it feel to have Cameron comment about Endgame's success possibly helping the Avatar sequels? Not surprisingly, Russo is thrilled that the legendary filmmaker has great things to say about his work.

"When someone says something like that about a movie you made when you grew up on their films, it's hard to process. The little kid inside of you certainly is ecstatic and validated," Russo said.

It's awesome to see that Russo and Cameron have great respect for each other's work. For now, we haven't seen any updates on Avatar 2 or the other sequels. Hopefully, we'll get some good news from the films soon.

The still-untitled Avatar 2 is scheduled for release on December 17, 2021.
