Avatar: The Way of Water Box Office Surpasses Another Highest Grossing Marvel Film

Avatar: The Way of Water box office continues to soar through the boards as it has not only surpassed Top Gun: Maverick and Spider-Man: No Way Home, but has also surpassed another highest grossing Marvel film, Avengers: Infinity War.

The 2018 Marvel film earned $2.052 billion, but this was beaten by James Cameron’s Avatar sequel which earned (and is continuing to earn) $2.054 billion at the box office. Though Avatar: The Way of Water’s box office has already previously passed the $2 billion milestone, it is safe to assume that the film is not stopping there just yet.

Upon its fourth week of screening, Avatar: The Way of Water nabbed a rare theatrical run extension which granted them more screening time, even though this has never been done in previous films before. As it continues to earn success, China has not only secured its theatrical release, but it has even doubled the initial 30-day theatrical run in their local theaters. Given that China has rarely allowed any other Hollywood films to show up in their cinemas over the years, this is a pretty huge deal.

As of writing, Avatar: The Way of Water has also landed an Oscar nomination alongside Top Gun: Maverick and Everything Everywhere All At Once for Best Picture.

Given Cameron’s film success, this has also garnered the attention on Zoe Saldana’s award for starring in numerous billion dollar franchises, which includes Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, making Saldana the first actor to historically star in four films crossing over $2 billion at the box office.

With this, James Cameron is off producing more for the Avatar franchise. Seeing as the delays in filming had only caused him to be more resilient, some scenes had already been filmed in advance like in Avatar 3: The Seed Bearer, which was teased to feature fire-wielding Na’vis this time.

Avatar: The Way of Water is still showing in cinemas worldwide.
