It looks like Disney has found a way to please Avatar fans who are waiting for the sequels. The first film is set for a re-release in China that could push the James Cameron movie to reclaim its box-office record from Avengers: Endgame.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Avatar will be returning to theaters exclusively in China. Interestingly, China's Film Bureau had approved the surprise release. This means that Chinese audiences could enjoy the technologically groundbreaking film screening in IMAX 3D and standard 3D starting this Friday.
But why release Avatar in China again during these times? As it turns out, the country's Film Bureau had previously requested for the film's release now that China has maintained control on COVID-19. Perhaps the movie will spark interest in Chinese audiences to go to the theaters all over again.
Avatar is certainly an interesting choice for China considering that the film held the record for the top-grossing movie of all time until it was dethroned by Avengers: Endgame. If the film does well on its Chinese re-release, it could reclaim the record from Marvel Studios.
For now, it is unclear whether Avatar will be able to defeat Avengers: Endgame. However, the sure winner here is Disney, who had acquired the rights to the film when they acquired 20th Century Fox.
The sequels to the 2009 movie are still in production and there is little doubt that the new films will be huge hits for Disney. Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 are scheduled for release on December 16, 2022, and December 20, 2024, respectively.
Avatar will screen exclusively in Chinese theaters on Friday, March 12.
