Remember when James Cameron announced that two Avatar would be released in the mid-2010s? Talks about an Avatar sequel have been around since the first part of the franchise was released in 2009, becoming the highest-grossing film. Thinking about that release date will likely make you feel old and not getting any younger waiting.
Time and again, fans have wondered why Avatar 2 is taking so long and whether it will ever be released at all. If you're wondering the same, we got you covered. Here's what we know so far:
Avatar 2 Release Date
After a very bumpy road, a release date for Avatar 2 has been confirmed. The long-awaited sequel is scheduled for theatrical release on the 16th of December 2022. It remains to be seen whether the film will be available to stream on the same date, on Disney+ or elsewhere.
It's not the first time we've been given an Avatar 2 release date, of course, but this one feels genuine, since the reason for the last delay, back in the summer of 2020, was due to a matter not in Cameron's hands. We know that the filming of Avatar 2 has come to an end, despite delays faced due to Covid-19, and with over a year until December 2022, there doesn't seem to be a reason to hold back any longer.
Excitingly for fans, three more Avatar sequels are currently planned to be released in 2024, 2026 and 2028 respectively. Of course, a lot will depend on whether Avatar 2 will go on as currently planned, and whether it will be as successful as the 2009 original.
While it's normal to take information about the sequels with a grain of salt after all the delays, the team seems optimistic that things are finally picking up for the beloved franchise.
Avatar 2: What Will It Be About?
Little is known about the specifics of the plot of Avatar 2. No synopsis is provided on IMDb other than "a sequel to Avatar (2009), but Cameron has suggested it will be concerned with family and imprisonment.
Jake Sully, now a chieftain of the clan, and Neytiri, now a high priestess, will definitely return, but in order to ensure that the second Avatar film stands well on its own, there will be no direct continuation from Avatar 1. The plot will largely concern their children.
Avatar 2 will likely take us on an underwater journey since a big reason for the film's delay was the need for very advanced technology for underwater filming to be free of false markers, as Cameron has explained.
Avatar 2 Cast: Who Will Appear?
Cast members who will return for the same roles as in the original Avatar film include mains Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, as well as Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, Stephen Land, Joel David Moore and others. Sigourney Weaver will also make an appearance but is going to have a new role this time around.
New cast members to join the franchise include Kate Winslet (Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Divergent), Cliff Curtis, Brendan Cowell (The Borgias, Game of Thrones), Michelle Yeoh (Crazy Rich Asians, Star Trek: Discovery), Vin Diesel (Avengers, Guardians of the Gallaxy), Oona Chaplin (Black Mirror, Game of Thrones), CJ Jones (Baby Driver), Eddie Falco (Sunshine State) and Jemaine Clement (What We Do In the Shadows).
That's all we know about Avatar 2 so far, but it's more than we've known in a long time, so our journey back to Pandora doesn't seem as far of as it used to.
