James Cameron's groundbreaking film Avatar dominated the global box office almost 12 years ago, enjoying a decade-long stay as the highest-grossing film of all time. However, as the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end and Avatar would eventually lose the distinction back in 2019 but it took a pretty formidable team to take the crown from the now-iconic science fiction film.

As all of you may know, Avengers: Endgame ended up besting the 2009 film and would officially be hailed as the most financially successful film of all time, earning a whopping 2.798 billion dollars at the box office. The film's success isn't too surprising, of course, considering it served as the culmination of the entire Infinity saga that has been building up since the first Iron Man film.

Now, Avatar seemingly has its sights set once again on reclaiming its throne and there's a good chance that the film could end up toppling down the Marvel Cinematic Universe juggernaut. According to a new scoop from The Hollywood Reporter, the film is set to return to Chinese theaters on March 12 and will be available on both digital 3D and IMAX 3D screenings.

Naturally, Marvel fans reacted after learning about the news and it's safe to say that they're not pleased with the possibility of Endgame getting dethroned. Check out some of the reactions here:

It's still unclear how long the film stays in theaters but considering Avatar is only 7 million away from surpassing Avengers: Endgame's impressive box office earnings, the "inevitable" could actually happen. I'm not saying this bothers Marvel Studios at all but I'm pretty sure that Kevin Feige and his crew already have a plan laid out should Avatar pull the upset victory because let's face it, they'd love to hang on to their box office record for as long as they can.

Avatar 2 is slated for release in December 2022.
