Attack on Titan Creator Shares What Inspired The Titans

One of the most notable features that Shingeki no Kyojin or Attack on Titan possesses is the concept of giants or more commonly known as “Titans” in the anime. The presence of Titans is exactly what drove the story and characters on testing the lengths of their humanity, of how far they’d be willing to go to save the Shiganshina District. Attack on Titan Wiki (AoTWiki) recently posted a short clip of Hajime Isayama being interviewed on TV for Songs of Tokyo Segment back in 2018, detailing what inspired the giants in his own anime series, which you can check out below:

As Isayama gazed upon the enormous terrain looming in his own backyard, the height akin to the walls in the anime, the author shares how the very wall of mountains is what inspired him of “seeing giants” wandering on the other side. Check out his full quote below:

“I’ve seen this view since I was a kid,” the Attack on Titan creator says, “So, I tend to think the whole world is within these mountains. I wondered what was on the other side.”

Isayama continues on to say how the mountains made him imagine giants living on the other side, taller than the very ones he was looking at, “There’s a reason there are giants on the other side of the walls. It represents having to survive in the harsh world outside. It’s a world where you have to battle just to get by.”

While the interview had occurred way back in 2018, the video’s resurfacing is very timely as it reminds us about the harsh world we continuously have to deal with.

We will soon be seeing the final part of Attack on Titan Season 4 by Winter 2023. In the meantime, you can catch up on Attack on Titan’s first three seasons and first two parts of Season 4 streaming on Crunchyroll.
