Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have been pitted against each other since time immemorial. In fact, the media has been blamed for the endless comparison between the two. But was there any chance the two had been friends?

Meghan and Kate first met in 2017. Since then, they have been major news in the British press. From being the members of the Fab Four with their respective husbands, Prince William and Prince Harry, feuding rumors started to surround the two duchesses.

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Started Out as Friends

The Duchess of Sussex and Princess of Wales can be compared to the relationship between the late Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson, King Charles and Prince Andrew's ex-wives. And just like them, that friendship was torn apart by the British tabloids.

Add to that the racist claims against the former Suits star and things get even worse—an issue that no royal has ever faced.

When Prince Harry introduced his then-girlfriend to his entire family, including Kate Middleton, they embraced her.

When they got engaged, the future queen consort told The Associated Press that she and her husband were "absolutely thrilled" about the news.

After their wedding in 2018, the two women bonded by watching Wimbledon. It was even their first outing together without their spouses. At the time, they were photographed laughing and smiling.

The Fab Four also happily seated together at Princess Eugenie's wedding in the same year, but everything changed a little later.

The Event That Changed Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle's Friendship

The change in Kate and Meghan's relationship began after the Sussexes held their Australia tour in October 2018.

In fact, the issue wasn't only between the two female royals but between the Sussexes themselves and the royal family.

The Duke of Sussex said it was the "first time that the family got to see how incredible" Meghan was at the job, per Insider.

After a month, reports emerged they wanted to move out of Kensington Palace, where Prince William and Kate lived, and stay at Frogmore Cottage to have more space for their then-upcoming baby.

From there, rumors about Meghan making Kate cry over a flower-girl dress emerged, the alleged breaking point of their relationship.

However, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan claimed that Kate made her cry, and the latter later owned it, apologized, and brought her flowers and an apology note.

"That was the turning point," Meghan said. "That was when everything changed."

Why Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Can't Be Friends?

Royal expert Kinsey Schofield believed Kate and Meghan couldn't be best friends due to their different values.

"I think Meghan and Catherine have very different values at their core. They were never going to be BFFs," she told Express.

"Meghan and Harry discuss a life of service while perpetually complaining to media outlets while Catherine and William literally live a life of service," she continued. "I just don't think the women have very much in common or similar goals."
