The massively hit 2014 thriller video game, Five Nights at Freddy's, is finally coming to the big screens this October! Those who are familiar with the game are well aware that the seemingly lively animatronics are bad news, which begs the question, are the Five Nights at Freddy's animatronics possessed? Are they based on real life?

Freddy Fazbear's Pizza was once filled with the joy of children for being a family-friendly pizzeria, as you can tell from Fazbear Entertainment's very own titular mascot in the logo.

However, after witnessing a string of disturbing and tragic news about the Pizza place, the story expanded into gruesome details behind its shutdown.

As it turned out, the co-founder of the franchise, William Afton, was also a serial killer who was rumored to have taken advantage of the Pizzeria to kidnap and murder children.

Right after committing his crimes, he shoved the corpses of these five children into the animatronic mascots, namely, Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy. The video game franchise merely expounded on this lore with prequels to the story.

Considering that the live-action movie from Blumhouse Productions is planning on adapting the full lore onto the big screens, the question remains, what drew the animatronics to life?

How exactly do they come alive whenever the night shift security guard takes over watching the Pizzeria? Have they really been possessed?

To tell the truth, the animatronics are indeed possessed. The main toys (Freddy and his friends) have each been taken over by the souls of the aforementioned children, which makes the story all the more horrifying to watch and see.

Essentially, the mechanical entities were established by the robotics industries (most of which belonged under Fazbear Entertainment, Inc., Afton Robotics, LLC, and Fazbear Funtime Service).

The 'life-like' appearances are supposed to resemble the animals each mascot represents, in which the inanimate objects would dance and sing around in their movable limbs and body suits to entertain the kids.

As to what draws the animatronics to suddenly attack during the night shift, the children's souls are convinced that the night shift security guard (who was initially William Afton) is the one who killed them.

The children's souls are not inherently evil while controlling the animatronics. They just seek one goal and that is to avenge the crime the Fazbear creator did to them.

Although, this answer does vary, depending on which video game you're playing, let's just say the film is likely going to play with the main story of the entire franchise.
