Aquatope on White Sand returned for another week. Episode 16 finally sheds light on a thus-far misunderstood character who had seemed unlikeable for no reason. True to its slice of life nature, the original 24-episode anime reminds us that no character is black-and-white. Everyone carries their own baggage in life, even that colleague you can't stand. The release date of Episode 17 will likely see the characters in a healthier work environment.

There are only a few episodes left, and, undoubtedly, the Aquatope team will make them matter. All episodes so far have been beautiful and heartwarming. That being the case, we can't wait to find out what they have in store for us as the anime wraps up. And while a Season 2 doesn't seem all that likely, we might find ourselves hoping.

With a penguin egg about to hatch, the aquarium attendants are all required to take extra shifts. The vet who gave birth in Gama Gama back several episodes ago also comes to Tingaara's aid now that her son can attend nursery.

In her usual unlikeable fashion, Chiyu Haebaru complains and refuses to take extra shifts. However, when Kukuru offers to take these shifts herself, Haebaru is entirely opposed to the idea.

After several episodes of Haebaru being obnoxious, seemingly for no good reason, we finally find out that her baggage is harder than her colleagues could imagine. She is the single mother of a toddler and tries hard to balance work with taking care of him.

Her son is prone to childhood illnesses, so Haebaru has to miss work to care for him. Kukuru, who takes her job a bit too seriously angrily confronts Haebaru. Upon learning about her colleague's young son, however, she feels ashamed. Soon after, she starts babysitting the vet's son, so that she can better understand Haebaru's lived experience.

Fuuka visits Haebaru, who reveals that her previous job fired her to avoid accommodating her caring responsibilities. This caused her marriage to crumble and forced her to return home to Okinawa. Finding another aquarium job was very challenging, so she decided to hide the fact that she's a single mother, fearing that this Tingaara would also dismiss her needs.

To her surprise, her colleagues are all extremely understanding and do their best to support her. Kukuru herself has understood her mistake and resolves to be kinder in the future.

All in all, this was such a heartwarming episode, and one with an important social message. Unfortunately, we don't see Haebaru's reality only in the fictional realm. Many mothers, single or not, often find themselves excluded from the workforce or have a hard time returning to work after maternity leave, as employers dismiss their needs. The resolution of Aquatope on White Sand is a bit on the idyllic side, truth be told, but workplaces should learn from Tingaara.

This also ties in really well to the theme of motherhood, which loosely ties all episodes together. The vet gave birth in Gama Gama while, Kukuru had questions about her mother, and feels like a mother of the sea creatures she takes care of. Haebaru might still not be your favorite character, but everything makes so much more sense now.

Aquatope of White Sand Episode 17 is going to air next Friday, the 29th of October for subscribed Crunchyroll users. Due to time zone differences, many international fans will be able to stream it from October 28 depending on where they are in the world. Non-subscribed users will have to wait an extra week, so they will be able to stream Episode 17 online in early November, but episode 16 will be available to everyone for free with ads by the 29th of October.
