Aquaman Movie To Feature ‘Sea Monsters And Cool Creatures’

Space has been explored more than the world's oceans in Hollywood movies. For this reason, the upcoming standalone Aquaman movie may not be on top of anybody's list of films to see.

Well, Aquaman director James Wan saw the DC film as an opportunity to explore our planet's oceans in a movie the same way that Hollywood has featured the vast outer space.

While at Wondercon promoting The Conjuring 2, Slashfilm asked the 39-year-old director about his thoughts on Aquaman.

He told the website:

There's always something kind of cool about Aquaman still, the idea of creating a huge world that is on our planet. That's the thing about Aquaman that's cool is he's not an alien, right? He's from our planet and he's from a society that we're not privy to in the context of the story.
Isn't it crazy to think that we've explored space more than we have explored the depths of our ocean? That just fires up my imagination about potential sea monsters and cool creatures, that kind of stuff.

Wan actually has a point. Looking at Hollywood, films exploring the galaxy have become more popular, or at least more interesting to make than films involving the far reaches of the ocean.

There's Star Wars, Star Trek, Interstellar, The Martian, Gravity, Guardians of the Galaxy, among others, but I can only think of 2 popular live-action films that would take us on an adventure under the sea, and both are even based on the same source material – Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

It's refreshing to hear Wan excited to explore different creatures in Aquaman despite humans' lack of knowledge about the undersea world. To be honest, I didn't find anything exciting about Aquaman's cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, much more a standalone movie involving all Aquaman. With a little bit of research and creativity from the perspective of a comic book film, Aquaman may stand a chance at being a pretty exciting movie to see.

What do you think of the upcoming standalone Aquaman film?
