Andrew Garfield has starred in several movies, and it seems each one offered an entirely different experience for the actor. Garfield recently detailed some of the things that he had to go through while he was preparing for his role in the 2016 movie, Silence.
Andrew Garfield Decided To Fast And Become Celibate While Preparing For His Role In Silence
During a recent interview on the WTF With Marc Maron, Andrew Garfield shared that he did several religious practices to prepare him for his role. And in order to help him understand what it’s like to be a priest, he also decided to fast and be celibate for six months.
“I did a bunch of spiritual practices every day, I created new rituals, I was celibate for six months and I was fasting a lot. It was very cool, man. I had some pretty wild, trippy experiences from starving myself of sex and food at that time,” he said.
Garfield also spent an entire year learning the ropes of priesthood from Jesuit writer Father James Martin, who eventually became his friend and mentor.

Andrew Garfield Reveals There Are Misconceptions When It Comes To Method Acting
The duo also turned to the rituals practiced by Konstantin Stanislavski to come up with Method acting over 100 years ago.
Even though Garfield did method acting on Silence, he also admitted that the practice could sometimes get out of hand.
“There [have] been a lot of misconceptions about what method acting is, I think. People are still acting in that way, and it’s not about being an a-hole to everyone on set. It’s actually just about living truthfully under imagined circumstances and being really nice to the crew simultaneously and being a normal human being and being able to drop it when you need to and staying in it when you want to stay in it,” he explained.
Andrew Garfield Says That He Will Be Taking A Break From Acting
Meanwhile, Garfield also made headlines in April when he announced that he would be taking a break from acting. He said that he wants to be an ordinary person for a while after being in the entertainment industry for years.
“I’m going to rest for a little bit. I need to recalibrate and reconsider what I want to do next and who I want to be and just be a bit of a person for a while. Because as you know, that is a washing machine, that awards season. I need to just be a bit ordinary for a while,” he told Variety.
Most recently, Garfield made a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He tried his best to hide the fact that he would be appearing in the movie but failed. After all, some fans of the actor saw him filming on the set alongside fellow Spider-Man actor, Tobey Maguire.
He also appeared in the Hulu show, Under the Banner of Heaven in April.
