Grand Admiral Thrawn finally made his live-action appearance in Ahsoka, with Lars Mikkelsen reprising the role after voicing the character in Rebels.

Most fans were delighted with the character's live-action look as they felt that it was accurate from the design in the animated shows and comics, and the practical makeup on Mikkelsen was effective on the screen.

As some people might imagine, bringing the character into live-action was not an easy feat due to his unique blue skin tone, which is considered to be his signature look.

The crew behind the series had to make sure that the character's translation to the live-action screen wouldn't do any disservice to the source material and the fans who have been eager to see him come to life.

In an interview with Empire Magazine (via Screen Rant), Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni opened up about the challenges of bringing Thrawn to live-action in his debut on the series.

He shared that Mikkelsen's makeup had to be adjusted throughout filming due to the nature of the Volume technology, which casts a magenta tone on the actors who are on set.

"It's amazing how many versions of [Thrawn’s makeup] went through the make-up team. The Volume set where Lars would do a decent amount of shooting casts a magenta tone. So with his colour palette, we had to dial it differently depending on what stage he was at," Filoni said.

Fortunately, it all worked out in the end as fans saw the results when they watched the series. Most viewers agree that the team found a way to bring Thrawn to live-action while still retaining his iconic design.

It also helps that Mikkelsen gave a wonderful performance in the role, and together with the impressive practical makeup, he was able to have a memorable presence throughout his appearances.

It is exciting to see what's next for the character in the future of the franchise since he has returned to the main galaxy and poses a major threat to the New Republic.

The first season of Ahsoka is available to stream on Disney+.
