Ahsoka surprised fans by introducing a new Inquisitor only to seemingly kill him off not long after. So, could Marrok be alive, and what exactly happened to him?

It is strongly suggested that Marrok died when he and Shin Hati ambushed Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren.

In Star Wars Rebels, we've seen several Inquisitors die during conflicts with Jedi so we aren't entirely surprised that Marrok couldn't survive a fight with Ahsoka.

She is, after all, one of the most powerful Jedi, and not many foes could defeat her easily; quite the opposite.

Ahsoka and Marrok's fight was quite tense, but not in the way most battle scenes are.

After seeing Marrok yield his red lightsaber in an ominous, circular manner which had us worried about Ahsoka, we didn't expect his defeat to come so soon.

But Ahsoka was quickly able to slice through his chest, seemingly causing him burns apart from a deadly slash.

Their battle is almost reminiscent of that between Obi-Wan and Darth Maul in Rebels, where it took but a single calculated move for the former to prevail.

Marrok is most likely dead, in an unceremonious way that assures us he was never anyone of note -- despite the theories -- but some think he could still be alive.

If this were the case, it wouldn't be the first time Star Wars fake-kills an Inquisitor.

Obi-Wan Kenobi pulled off the same in one of its early episodes, although the trick didn't really work for those who had watched Rebels, and therefore knew the Grand Inquisitor's true fate.

Given how bad that "twist" was, we can't see why Ahsoka would want to try it again, so we would assume that Marrok is indeed dead.

That being said, theory-loving fans might only consider him dead for good if the finale comes around without him reappearing.

Those who believe he might be alive refer to the fact that the slash in the chest didn't seem to have pierced Marrok all the way and that Sabine survived worse in episode 1.

Some people are already invested in Marrok theories (with him being Ezra as one of the most popular) and think that the new Star Wars series wouldn't introduce another Inquisitor only to kill him without explanation.

But unceremonious death is always a harsh possibility in armed conflicts and it's entirely possible that Marrok is dead, with no special meaning behind his demise.

If anything, Shin Hati seemed shocked enough to see him die, and she, Morgan, and Baylan left without him, suggesting that they, too, consider him dead. Speaking of Morgan, though...

The way Marrok combusts in a cloud of smoke after being hit by Ahsoka reminds us of the death of Darth Maul's brother, Savage Oppress.

He, too, had been partly a Nightsister's creation.

So far, we hadn't necessarily suspected that Morgan had created Marrok. But the Inquisitor always kept his face and body covered, never spoke, and didn't seem to have much of an identity.

Knowing that Morgan Elsbeth is a Nightsister, we suspect that she could make others like him.

Of course, now that she's getting her wish to travel to Thrawn's location, she might not feel the need to.

Hopefully, the next Ahsoka episodes will confirm if Marrok will return in any form or not.
