Eternals Star Kumail Nanjiani Reacts to Critics on Movie's LGBTQ+ Representation

The latest release of Marvel, Eternals, has been facing critics early on as reviews of the film were bombed on IMDB wherein it got a lot of one star as users are criticizing the LGBTQ+ representation in the movie even when it was not released to the general public yet. One of the actors, Kumail Nanjiani, reacted to such in a very Kingo way.

Kumail Nanjiani took it to Twitter where he retweeted news from MCU The Direct about Eternals being review bombed for the LGBTQIA+ representation in the film even when the movie is yet to release worldwide. Nanjiani tweeted, “Looks like we’re upsetting the right people. Eternals opens November 5th.”

A lot of talks are circling about the Eternals from the comic book readers and critics as characters got an overhaul from their gender, race, and sexuality in the movie adaptation. Even the character of Nanjiani got a change from a Japanese samurai to a Bollywood movie star. Some were gender-swapped like Makkari and Ajak who were male in the comics but portrayed by women in the movie, gender fluid Spirte gets a female adaptation.

However, the attention of those who were criticizing the film circles around Phastos, portrayed by Brian Tyree Henry, as he has the most controversial change: he is the first openly gay superhero in the MCU where he has a husband and a child. The inclusion of LGBTQIA+ characters seems to have agitated critics even when they haven’t seen the movie yet given that it is yet to release worldwide.

Nanjiani is known for being outspoken in his support of the LGBTQIA+ representation in Eternals and having it bombed by negative reviews would piss him off because who wouldn’t? People are too quick to judge as they haven’t seen the movie yet.

As the embargoes were lifted, Eternals received a mixed reception from various critics. Still, with characters like Phastos, being an open member of the LGBTQIA+, or Makkari, a deaf superhero, mean a step forward for more diversity, inclusion, and representation in the MCU and in films in general. Marvel, opening the doors, stands proud of this movie.

Eternals premieres on November 5, 2021.
