It looks like Disney's finally made its move towards blockbuster streaming releases. Following Warner Brother's decision to give Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated spy blockbuster, Tenet, a staggered release, Disney has announced that it will be releasing Mulan on Disney+ this September for $29.99.
The House of Mouse just recently held a company earnings call today (via The Verge), and one of the main points of the meeting was Disney's plan to release Mulan on its streaming platform as an attempt at combating the delays forced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We thought it was important to find alternative ways to bring [Mulan] in a timely manner," said Disney CEO Bob Chapek.
Disney fans interested in seeing Mulan will have to pay $30 on top of the $6.99 subscriber fee for Disney+. During the meeting Chapek also seemed to hint that non-subscribers could also pay $30 for the film, however, this detail has yet to be confirmed.
The company is not releasing the film entirely on Disney+ though. The House of Mouse is going to release Mulan in theaters in countries where Disney+ is not available, dropping the film on the same date it launches on Disney's official streaming site.
This is major news for Disney fans. If Mulan's streaming release proves to be a success, then Disney may very well do the same kind of release for other major blockbusters like Marvel's very first Phase 4 movie, Black Widow.
We're crossing our fingers that this new strategy works for Mulan. The film has had quite a bumpy ride. Original slated for release on March 27, the movie was pushed to July 24, and then delayed to August 21.
Mulan is now officially set to release on Disney+ on September 4.
