Thor: Ragnarok Director Says Movie 'Is Not Really A Comedy'

With Taika Waititi's background in comedy (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do In the Shadows), people would think that Thor: Ragnarok is going to be one goofy movie with his direction; even Samuel L. Jackson has called "Sacrilege!" on a funny Thor movie. Waititi has gone on to clarify that Ragnarok is "not really a comedy," but Hemsworth is still "one of the funniest things in this film."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Waititi said:

"It's not really a comedy… There are some really great moments we're going to have in the film. Knowing that it was Bruce Banner and Thor on kind of a road trip journey, that lends itself to a tone because those guys are both really funny. I was like you gotta exploit Chris' comic abilities. He's so good and underutilized in that department. He's legitimately one of the funniest things in this film."

He also goes on to compare Ragnarok to the 80s film, Big Trouble in Little China. Waititi explains:

"Big Trouble in Little China was one of those films where Jack Burton is a buffoon but he's lovable and you're with him the entire way. I thought Thor has got to be the one you want to be with in every scene."

I don't think people should worry that much about Thor: Ragnarok being too silly and losing the emotional weight. If you look at Waititi's track record, you can see that though his films are funny, they also have a deep sense of heart and emotion. With a guy like him in the director's chair, we can see a whole new side to the God of Thunder actually being more human. I'm genuinely excited.

Thor: Ragnarok is slated for a release on Nov. 3.
