Steven Spielberg Explains Why Ready Player One Only Makes References To The Original Star Wars Trilogy

Ready Player One is brimming with so many pop cultural references, and yesterday director Steve n Spielberg told fans that they'd also see a few Star Wars Easter eggs in the film, including R2-D2 and a few X-Wings.

However it seems like fans shouldn't expect any references to the prequel trilogy or references to the newer set of Star War movie to pop up in Ready Player One. Speaking in an interview with Cinema Blend, Spelbierg explains to fans that he and his team just couldn't include "contemporary characters" or ships in the film because it just wouldn't fit in the setting of the movie.

"I didn't think it would be good to do the contemporary characters in all of the [new] Star Wars films, because our film takes place in 2045 but everybody has returned nostalgically to the 1980s. Disney was very generous in letting us basically cherry-pick the little items we neede," Spielberg told the publication.

While there are 90's pop culture references as well ( like the Iron Giant and a T-Rex from Jurrasic Park) having Easter eggs just wouldn't fit in the old school nostalgia of Ready Player One. Having Rey pop up with a porg or with BB-8 might seem like a cute idea, but it just wouldn't fit in the film.

Ready Player One premieres on March 29.
