Star Wars: The Last Jedi Separated Finn and Poe Because They Got Along Too Well

It might not happen now, but in another universe, it seems like Poe (Oscar Isaac) might have actually been the one tagging along with Finn (John Boyega) on the mission to get a master code breaker on Canto Bight instead of the Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Sitting down for an interview with Collider,The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson talks about the original draft for his sequel to The Force Awakens, and according to the filmmaker he actually wanted Poe to accompany Finn to Canto Bight the first time he wrote the script.

"In the very first draft I wrote of it, Poe went with Finn on the mission to Canto Bight, and the two of them were going to be together on the mission," Johnson explained. "And it didn't work at all because those two get along so well and it'd be really boring."

It isn't much of a surprise. Though fans who have been supporting the potential of a Finn and Poe relationship might be disappointed by Johnson's decision to swap Finn's mission partner, the director's always been keen on testing the mettle of the various characters in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Strength of character shines in times of adversity, and having Poe tag along with Finn wouldn't allow the characters to grow as much as they did in the film.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
