Paul Bettany Talks About The Results Of Vision’s Love For Scarlet Witch In Captain America: Civil War

Both the Vision and Scarlet Witch have powers that would clearly trump those of the rest of the Avengers, making it appear that the two are the perfect couple. We don't really see them hitting it off in Captain America: Civil War, but they had their moments in the film.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Radio (SiriusXM, channel 105), the Vision actor Paul Bettany discusses the connection of the two, as well as his character's sudden curiosity with seeing as the synthetic being doesn't really eat.

The 44-year-old British actor explained:

I think he has a real connection with Scarlet Witch. They both have these new burgeoning powers that they don't understand, and they don't know how powerful they are, and that must be kind of scary. And so I think he's worried that they're both dangerous. So he feels this real connection with her. And she's a bit of a depressive at the moment so he's just trying to cook for her.

This begs the question of how the Vision is able to love, considering he is a logical being. It's worth noting that Bettany has talked about this romance between his character and Elizabeth Olsen's in a previous interview, although in this EW interview, the actor provides a more in-depth answer:

He has logic in abundance. And logic does not afford any room for loyalty. New information could come to light and he might flip to Captain America's side. But love solidifies things and provides loyalty. So if he's there to protect mankind – or frankly, the universe – he needs to figure out what's good about these creatures, and I think that's the quest that you find him on. And, of course, in the comics, the relationship becomes romantic. We'll see moving forward what happens for Vision and Wanda.
You see him in the first movie, he's born. He's omnipotent, but he's incredibly naïve. And in this movie he's kind of beginning to take a more paternal role in the superhero family, and he's growing at an exponential rate, and by the end of the movie he has a real emotion and real human reaction and he makes firstmistake that he's ever made.

I've seen Captain America: Civil War and that mistake takes place during the major airport battle between Team Cap and Team Iron Man, where the Vision gets distracted by his feelings for Wanda and he paralyzes War Machine instead of hitting Falcon.

Discussing the harrowing moment, Bettany said:

What happened there is that his judgment was clouded there by real love and affection. And he responded in a quick and thoughtless way.… I really love that the moral compass of the movie is this synthetic person who's trying to figure out what it means to be human. It's a neat idea, you know?

A neat idea indeed, and that's what I love about the movie. Marvel-Disney is able to explore the personality and the motivation of each of its superhero despite having such limited screen time. It also provides an exciting premise for what's to come for the relationship of Wanda and the Vision.
