The Matrix 4: Here's Why Laurence Fishburne Won't Play Morpheus Anymore

We already know that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are both returning as Neo and Trinity, respectively, in The Matrix 4. But why isn't Laurence Fishburne reprising his role as Morpheus in the highly anticipated sequel? The reason may have already been confirmed by the franchise's official game.

Although most people believe that The Matrix Online isn't a true continuation of the franchise's storyline, fans who have taken part in the multiplayer online game consider it as something of a sequel to The Matrix Revolutions. With that in mind, the upcoming film sequel could take certain details from the game's storyline.

But how is this connected to Morpheus' appearance in The Matrix 4? Screenrant points out that one of the major things that happened in The Matrix Online was the death of Morpheus. In the game, the character is killed by a mysterious killer long before the gameplay is over.

So does this mean Morpheus will not appear in the sequel? There have been speculations that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be playing a younger version of the character. If this is true, it could mean that Neo and Trinity will end up trying to find Morpheus in the Matrix and come across the character as a young man.

It's an interesting idea considering that Morpheus is one of the most important characters in the franchise and isn't someone who should be left out of the sequel. However, it is also important to point out that Abdul-Mateen's role in the film has not yet been confirmed so it's best to take it with a grain of salt.

The Matrix 4 is scheduled for release on May 21, 2021.
