People were understandably disappointed when Qui-Gon Jinn was killed in The Phantom Menace. After all, the Jedi Master could have been the one person who may have prevented Anakin Skywalker from joining the Dark Side. But is it possible that there was another reason why Liam Neeson's character should have been kept alive? A new Star Wars book may have revealed that Qui-Gon was the one person who could have stopped Darth Sidious from fulfilling his plans for the Galactic Empire.
The new book Queen's Peril by E.K. Johnston actually focuses on Padme Amidala and her handmaidens and is set prior to the events in The Phantom Menace. However, it also features a scene when Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan Kenobi going over the taxation bills that will be brought to the Republic Senate.
It seems like an odd job for the Jedi but it is later confirmed that these taxation bills were created by Sidious as a way to help the Trade Federation invade Naboo. In return, Palpatine would then ascend to the position of Chancellor.
Not surprisingly, Qui-Gon felt something strange about the legislation. This is why he and Obi-Wan were trying to figure it out. Sadly, Qui-Gon's hunch would die with him as he faced off against Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace.
It has already been established that Qui-Gon was one of the most important characters in the Star Wars Universe. On the other hand, his survival may have reversed everything that would lead to the tragic storyline of the Skywalker Saga.
