Cowboy Bebop Will NOT be a Direct Adaptation of Original Anime

There is little doubt that fans have certain expectations when it comes to the upcoming Cowboy Bebop live-action series. However, people shouldn't expect a direct adaptation of the original anime. Showrunner Andre Nemec revealed that the new show will be different while staying true to the source material.

Nemec recently spoke to Polygon about the upcoming series and he revealed that the live-action Cowboy Bebop will not be direct adaptations of each episode of the anime. Instead, it will "build out the continuing stories of Spike Spiegel and Jet Black and Faye Valentine while also mining their past stories from the anime."

The showrunner was quick to point out that there will be something for Cowboy Bebop fans who are looking for Easter Eggs.

"I would challenge almost any superfan on this show to see if they can find [all the references] in the frame," Nemec said. Moreover, he confirmed that the original Japanese and English voice actors will also be "properly homaged" in the series.

It's an interesting revelation considering that some are expecting the new show to be a frame-by-frame adaptation of the anime. On the other hand, it's a welcome thing for fans who are hoping that there will be something new to expect in the live-action series.

But will it be too different from the original Cowboy Bebop? Nemec assures fans that everything has been approved by creator Shinichiro Watanabe, who served as a consultant on the show.

"The greatest part about being able to work on this was that we knew we were being invited to play in somebody else's sandbox," he said, "and that sandbox was very generous in saying to us, ‘You tell your story."

Cowboy Bebop will star John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, Alex Hassell as Vicious, and Elena Satine as Julia. The series will premiere on Netflix on November 19, 2021.
