The extended delay of Black Widow has done little to dissuade fans from watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe film in droves. The Scarlett Johansson movie has just decimated the opening weekend record by taking in an astounding $80 million in the domestic box office. Additionally, its worldwide box haul is estimated at a jaw-dropping $218 million.
Disney revealed that Black Widow earned over $60 million from its digital release on Disney+ where the movie was made available by purchasing the $29.99 Premier Access. The digital earnings, along with the international box office haul of $78 million and $80 million domestic hauls, makes the MCU film the biggest opening weekend winner in the post-pandemic era.
It's an impressive feat for a Marvel film, especially for one that was delayed by more than a year. Additionally, Black Widow was in danger of being released digitally as Disney feared that cinemas would continue to stay closed. Needless to say, we can imagine just how massive the box office earnings would have been if the movie was released before the pandemic era.
Black Widow was initially set to premiere in May 2020 but needed to be pushed back due to COVID-19. Although it was expected to hit theaters later that year, the continued fear during the pandemic forced Disney to delay the movie to 2021 with the option of a simultaneous digital release.
Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland and also stars Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz. The film is currently screening in theaters and on Disney+ via Premier Access.
