Fruits Basket Season 3 feels closer than ever now that Episode 1 has a release date; especially with the dubbed version premiering today, the 19th of March on Funimation. Until the Japanese version starts its normal weekly airing on Crunchyroll, here's all you need to know about the slice-of-life, shōjo fantasy work and its darker season yet:

But first, a little overview. Fruits Basket is based on Takaya Natsuki's manga of the same name and one of the most popular works in its genre. The main character, high-school girl Tohru Honda, moves in with her classmates Yuki and Kyo Sohma and their older cousin and guardian, Shigure, following the death of her beloved mother.

Soon, she finds that the Sohmas hide a secret: members of the family are cursed by the spirits of the Chinese zodiac circle, which causes them to transform into one of the zodiac animals when they're unwell or hugged by a member of the opposite sex.

Due to this, the 12 cursed family members and Kyo, a thirteenth family member possessed by the spirit of the cat, have grown up isolated, feared even by their own relatives.

But this is not all. Those who are cursed have all suffered at the hands of Akito, the abusive head of the family who has godlike powers over them due to the curse and doesn't like seeing them happy and away from home. But Tohru isn't ready to give up her found family. Seeing how each of them has suffered, she eventually takes it upon herself to free them from their curse despite Akito's wrath.

Season 2 revealed that Kureno, once possessed by the spirit of the rooster, has been freed already, meaning there's hope for the rest of the Sohmas. More shockingly, we find out that Akito is a woman in a sexual relationship with Shigure. Some of Shigure's machinations finally make more sense, but we still have a long way to go in terms of revelations.
