Ready Player Two, the sequel to the 2018 Steven Spielberg-directed sci-fi blockbuster, is currently in the works. Ernest Cline's sequel novel was released last November, nine years after his original pop culture-obsessed sci-fi book Ready Player One, but it appears to be fast-tracked to the screen after the adaptation of Cline's first novel hit theaters in 2018.

Ready Player Two's screenplay is being adapted by Cline, who also co-wrote the screenplay of the first film with Zak Penn. Speaking to Inverse, Cline revealed that the sequel is in the early stages of development of a feature adaptation at Warner Bros. According to the author, Ready Player Two will take place just nine days after protagonist Wade Watts wins James Halliday's Easter Egg hunt, a scavenger hunt awarding its winner ownership to the massive virtual game called OASIS. Watts becomes the richest man in the world and takes control over OASIS. If the sequel film follows the plot of the second novel, Wade will discover a new technology invented by Halliday that lets him to experience all senses in the virtual world.

“I can tell from the experience of making the first movie that everybody had a lot of fun,” Cline said when talking about the sequel. “I really tried my best to focus on just writing a sequel to my book. There are characters in the movie that are alive that aren’t alive in the book. I focused on trying to give fans the book without letting the film influence me. The movie will sort itself out later.”

Warner Bros. and Cline haven't mentioned who will be directing Ready Player Two movie or if any of the original cast members will return.

“It’s in the early stages right now,” he says, “especially since Hollywood is in limbo right now. But I can tell from the experience of making the first movie that everybody had a lot of fun.”

Here is the official synopsis of the Ready Player Two novel:

Are you ready? Days after winning OASIS founder James Halliday's contest, Wade Watts makes a discovery that changes everything. Hidden within Halliday's vaults, waiting for his heir to find, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the OASIS a thousand times more wondrous — and addictive — than even Wade dreamed possible. With it comes a new riddle, and a new quest — a last Easter egg from Halliday, hinting at a mysterious prize.

And an unexpected, impossibly powerful, and dangerous new rival awaits, one who'll kill millions to get what he wants. Wade's life and future of the OASIS are again at stake, but this time the fate of humanity also hangs in the balance. Lovingly nostalgic and wildly original as only Ernest Cline could conceive it, Ready Player Two takes us on another imaginative, run, action-packed adventure through his beloved virtual universe, and jolts us thrillingly into the future once again.

This synopsis was revealed by Wil Wheaton at the New York Comic-Con panel in October 2020. Wheaton, who narrated the audiobook versions of the original Ready Player One novel, returned to narrate the sequel, which is now currently available on Audible

Since Ready Player Two is still in the early stages of development, no further details have been revealed, but we will update you once we find out its release date, cast, and plot here on EpicSteram.
