Game of Thrones Remaining Episode Count Confirmed

Game of Thrones' days are numbered—or rather, its remaining episodes are. While everyone already had an inkling that the last two seasons won't follow the same number count as the previous six ones did, the showrunners have given a definitive count to start off your own countdown.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Game of Thrones will wrap up at 73 episodes total for its entire eight-season run. This means that the final season will only have six episodes, one more down from season seven's expected seven episodes.

Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were able to confirm this since the duo had already known how many episodes they needed to tell the story completely and intricately. You know you have a good project when it's all about keeping things precise rather than injecting fillers just to run longer episodes.

Even if Game of Thrones will end soon enough, there are still a few upcoming projects related to the franchise. For one, there are five prequel stories that are currently in the storyboard. Granted, this doesn't guarantee five shows, but it just goes to show how expansive the GoT universe is for spin-offs.

Then again, if a fan can create this amazing prequel film on his own with a pretty compelling story, then you know one of those stories is bound to be green-lit.

Game of Thrones will be back in HBO on July 16.
