Game of Thrones: George R.R. Martin Confirms Brienne Has A Famous Ancestor

A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) author George R.R. Martin recently shared some new background info about Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), confirming that she has a famous ancestor.

Martin attended a convention in Baltimore called Balticon to read a new chapter from his forthcoming book The Winds of Winter, Vanity Fair reports, and during his time in front of the audience, the author announced that Brienne of Tarth is the descendant of Ser Duncan the Tall.

Just in case you don't know who he is, Ser Duncan The Tall is one of Westeros' most famous knights, and it makes sense that he's connected to Brienne of Tarth, and this is pretty noteworthy because Duncan is one of Martin's favorite characters.

The author even wrote an entire series of novellas centered around the character, which was later adapted by Marvel into graphic novels. Martin also previously said that if there were to be a spin-off of Game of Thrones, he'd want it to focus on Ser Duncan's story and his squire.

Hopefully, we'll see this backstory addressed in the show.

Game of Thrones airs on Sunday at HBO at 9 p.m. EST.
