It's long been believed by fans that director Zack Snyder chose to withdraw from 2017's Justice League following the untimely passing of his daughter Autumn. To those who don't remember what went down, Snyder had to step down as director of the project in the middle of filming which led to Joss Whedon taking over and finishing the film.

Now, fast forward to 2021, Snyder has revealed the real reason for his departure from the project. In a new interview with Sean O'Connell, author of the upcoming book Release the Snyder Cut (via CinemaBlend), Snyder claims that the passing of his daughter had nothing to do with his decision to leave mid-production.

In fact, it was Warner Bros. Pictures that forced him to make the decision that would drastically change the entire film. Snyder says: "I just was kind of done with it. I was in this place of [knowing] my family needs me more than this bullshit, and I just need to honor them and do the best I can to heal that world. I had no energy to fight [the studio], and fight for [the movie]. Literally, zero energy for that. I really think that’s the main thing. I think there’s a different world where I stayed and kind of tried. And I’m sure I could have… because every movie is a fight, right? I was used to that. But I just did not have the [energy]. There was no fight in me. I had been beaten by what was going on in my life and I just didn’t want to, I didn’t care to . . . that was kind of where I was."

It's quite intriguing why it took almost four years for Snyder to tell his side of the story but considering WB's history of meddling with its directors' creative vision, this version of the story doesn't seem all that surprising. What's totally shocking is the fact that they had to use the death of Snyder's daughter to cover things up.

Now, we're still unsure how the studio would react to Snyder's stunning revelation but I do hope that this doesn't change anything between them as I'm hopeful that Zack will stick around in the DCEU despite his claim that Justice League will serve as his farewell to the franchise.

Zack Snyder's Justice League will hit HBO Max this March.
