Birds of Prey's Rosie Perez Wasn't a Fan of Film's Ageist Jokes About Her Character

It's safe to say at this point that DC's only superhero offering for 2020 Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) — Geez, that's still a mouthful — was successful in delivering some unadulterated R-rated action and then some and it's definitely miles better than 2016's Suicide Squad. We still don't know what the future holds for Gotham's feisty Femme Fatales especially now that Harley is moving on to bigger and grander things via James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, but Rosie Perez, who played Renee Montoya in the film said she's open to the idea of doing a sequel.



In a recent interview with UPROXX, Perez expressed her desire to return for a sequel. She shared, "I mean, if it happens, sure. When you said that, the first thing that came to my mind was, Oh my God, I have to lose weight and get in shape again."

However, the 56-year-old actress admitted that while she enjoyed working on the film, she wasn't exactly too fond of the ageist jokes about her version of Renee Montoya. She added, "Hopefully, there won't be any ageist type of jokes in it as well. Having me called ‘grandma.' That was the only thing, I was like, ‘Really guys? Really?' I was like, Would you have the nerve to say that to Helen Mirren, in her 50 million action movies?"

Fans have gotten used to the Batman: The Animated Series version of Renee Montoya who is considerably younger (most likely the same age as Catwoman and Poison Ivy) than her live-action counterpart we ended up getting and the decision to cast an older actress for the part has irked some followers of the Batman mythos. I mean, no offense to Perez, I thought she did great but she seemed a little too out of place in the film. That's not to say though that I wouldn't give her a second chance because like I said, she was good in the BOP.

Meanwhile, James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is slated to hit cinemas in 2021.
