Avengers: Age of Ultron by no means is a terrible comic book movie but it always seems to get left out of the conversation whenever Marvel fans debate about their favorite MCU film. The 2015 film marked Joss Whedon's final outing in the franchise and it can be argued that things started to go downhill for the director who would later helm the divisive Justice League over at DC.
Age of Ultron was still a pretty solid film all things considered and it did have its redeeming qualities — namely the Marvel Cinematic Universe debuts of iconic Marvel characters Scarlet Witch and Vision who are now starring in their own MCU spinoff show WandaVision. Things turned out pretty well for actress Elizabeth Olsen who was reportedly Whedon's only pick to play Wanda Maximoff.
Paul Bettany's character Vision, on the other hand, almost had a controversial arrival to the franchise. According to Bettany himself, when they were coming up with Vision's grand entrance in the film, Whedon insisted on showing the synthezoid's private parts, an idea that raised a few eyebrows on set.
In an interview with Lights, Camera, Pod, Bettany reveals: "I know that Joss Whedon apparently really, really wanted the rendition of him, when Vision first is born, before he was clothed, he was like 'He's gotta have a penis.' And everyone - Kevin (Feige) and Lewis, I mean everybody was like 'I don't know, Joss… I mean… I'm not sure… HE HAS TO HAVE A PENIS, I WANT TO SEE SOME DRAWINGS OF PENISES!'"
Whedon would eventually come to his senses and take back the idea. "So they actually, somewhere is the rendition of Vision's birth with these penises and they put them all up on the wall, and then they went in, and they sat down, and Joss went…'Yeah, I'm 100% wrong. I don't need to see any of these.'"
Thankfully, Kevin Feige and his crew were able to persuade Whedon into changing his mind about his "risky" idea. It's worth noting that Disney strictly follows a moral code and showing Vision's genitals in a PG-13 movie wouldn't exactly be that appropriate for the House of Mouse's family-oriented product.
Meanwhile, WandaVision is streaming on Disney+.
