Simon Kinberg: All Marvel Fox Films Are Currently Being Evaluated by Disney

Before the Fox/Disney Merger became finalized, Fox was actually planning several spinoff films based on their X-Men property. With the merger taking place and several of the projects being put on hold, it's been revealed that Disney is currently evaluating the movies that were initially planned and seeing whether they would be viable moving forward.

Talking to Variety, producer Simon Kinberg shared, "The latest is, ‘we'll see.' Honestly, since the merger happened, I think all of the movies that were Fox (not just the Marvel movies), all the movies in Fox are being evaluated, and [Disney will] figure out what they want to do with them."

Before Disney took over everything, Fox was set to work on films like X-Force, Gambit, and Kitty Pryde. With plans to integrate the X-Men into the MCU, I think those films will have to be put on hold, seeing that we need time to establish a new mutant status quo into the cinematic universe of Marvel.

When it comes down to it, the earliest we could get a mutant film in the MCU is 2021, and that's mostly because we have to consider time for development and production of a film. Maybe when everything else has been established into the MCU, we can finally look at character spinoffs and the more experimental fare. After 10 years of the MCU, you'd think the studio would be willing to try some more experimental films.

For now, the last Marvel Fox film that's set to come out in theaters is X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Catch it in cinemas June 7, 2019.
