Ok, I know that I've said some not nice things about Burning Kabaddi in the past but this week I'm willing to say that maybe this series is starting to grow on me? Maybe just a little?

In episode 5 of Burning Kabaddi, we meet a rival high school kabaddi team who have a secret weapon of their own; a star swimmer who left the sport and decided to join the kabaddi team as their new ace raider. In the first minute of the 5-on-5 practice match, the stars of their respective teams do battle against each other in a game of oneupmanship with pride on the line.

Animated by TMS Entertainment, Burning Kabaddi is based on a shonensportsmanga of the same name which is up to 17 collected volumes in Japan as of April 2021. The anime adaptation premiered on April 3rd and features Kazuya Ichikawa as the director working off scripts written by Yuko Kakihara.

Alright, yes, I admit it. Once you get past the initial weak premise and characters with initially abrasive personalities (as is pretty standard in anime), you can find a relatively enjoyable series about a sport that doesn't really get much attention. I believe I mentioned very early on in our coverage of this series that I had actually had to look up what kabaddi was before I could watch the first episode. I'm still nowhere close to an expert on the subject (and likely never will be) but I feel like this series has given me a newfound appreciation for the sport.

Burning Kabaddi is not the best sports anime ever. It's not even the best sports anime of the season (cut to me gazing lovingly at Backflip!!). Even still, however, it's entertaining and helps me get through that last day of the week before the weekend begins, which is saying something.
