X-Men Producer Says Channing Tatum was Born to Play Gambit

The Gambit movie had apparently a very hard time getting off the ground, and Fox even ended up merging with Disney before the film could get started. For now, Disney is making a big evaluation of which Fox projects they should move forward with, and X-Men producer Simon Kinberg still thinks that Gambit should be made.

Talking to Variety, Kinberg talks about Channing Tatum and how he would be perfect to play the role of the Ragin' Cajun. Kinberg explains:

"I would love to see [Gambit] happen. I love the idea of Channing playing Gambit. I think we have a great script for it, and I think it's a role he was born to play. It's a character I grew up loving, and I know the fans love, so I suspect—I hope it will happen."

Before Disney acquired Fox, the studio was actually working on more experimental takes on their X-franchise. With Deadpool bordering on R-rated territory, The New Mutants would have been horror, and Gambit was going to be from the romantic comedy genre. Apparently, the movie was already set to go, but after the dismal reception of Fant4stic, production was asked by the studio to lessen the budget.

From that point, the movie has been having a hard time getting off the ground.

While I personally think Gambit is a character that best works with an ensemble, this romantic comedy take on the superhero genre does sound a bit interesting. With the MCU yet to establish mutants though, I think it will be a while before we can get spinoff films like X-Force and Kitty Pryde. Hopefully, Marvel is willing to be more experimental moving onto Phase 4, because as of now, despite all of the hype surrounding Avengers: Endgame, people are starting to call the MCU films formulaic. I mean, even the DCEU is taking a risk with a spinoff like Joker.

Try something new, Marvel!

Kinberg's X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to come out June 7.
