X-Men: Dark Phoenix Set To Lose More Than 1000 Theaters After Box Office Flop

There was a lot riding on X-Men: Dark Phoenix. As the final film in the X-Men franchise, the film was expected to give closure to Fox's mutant film series. However, the film ended up being a major flop. Not only did the film drown in negative reviews from fans and from critics, but it also ended up losing money in the box office.

Now, according to a new report by Exhibitor Relations,Dark Phoenix is expected to lose 1,667 theaters in the film's third week of release. That's a whole lot of screenings. This new loss definitely won't help the film earn in cinemas to at least reach its production cost.

Ever since the film's premiere earlier this month, Dark Phoenix has only managed to rake in $208 million at the worldwide box office. That's the lowest total in the X-Men franchise's 19-year history.

Not only that, but the film opened to the lowest number in the franchise too, raking in $32 million during its opening weekend. That's $20 million below the $54 million that Bryan Singer's X-Men movie earned back in 2000, not to mention inflation.

This is definitely disappointing news for Dark Phoenix. Sure, Marvel is already set to reboot the franchise, however, the film's poor results seem to have made the studio less eager to bring the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Last week, Marvel Studios told fans that they weren't in a rush to reboot the franchise – most likely because of Dark Phoenix's failings.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is currently screening in cinemas.
