Ahead of its September release, The Boys Season 2 reveals the addition of an X-Men alum to play the role of Lamplighter!
Things are about to get spicy with the addition of actor Shawn Ashmore, making his debut as another superhero character in the bloody superhero series, having played the part of Iceman in the X-Men franchise.
A complete total role reversal, Ashmore's Lamplighter is a former superstar member of the Seven before he left "under mysterious circumstances, to be replaced by Starlight." The character ties in directly to the Boys' history, wherein he's actually the reason they broke up eight years ago. Of course, Lamplighter's return won't be easy, dredging up painful memories and "changes everything." You can check out the first look at Lamplighter below (via TVLine).
"We were thrilled that Shawn — who is, let's be honest, an OG superhero — wanted to play the crucial part of Lamplighter," The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke said in a statement. Kipke adds that the actor brings "so much depth, menace, and world-weary humanity" to the character, and is grateful to have him join the cast.
Ashmore watched the show before he was cast, so he was wondering about Lamplighter's character. "What was fun for me stepping in is that a lot of the mythology and the backstories are already built," he adds. "And I was asking myself who is this character? What is this character?"
The actor says there's going to be a "preconceived notion" about Lamplighter based on his actions and how people talk about him, adding that the show does well with "peeling" those layers back.
It'll be interesting to see how Ashmore translates his experience in playing Iceman to that of a much bloodier story, not to mention how ironic it is for his superhero roles to be such complete opposites.
The Boys Season 2 premieres September 4 with the first three episodes, followed by a weekly release of episodes that'll culminate to its October 9 season finale.
