X-Files Star Doesn't Want Series Continuation Without Gillian Anderson

Amidst the changing times, The X-Files remains a staple of pop culture. With its eleventh and final season airing in 2018, it’s been a while since fans have experienced the supernatural investigations of two FBI special agents, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson).

Given its hiatus, fans are asking if the show has the chance to return and exhibit more paranormal exploration. While talking to ComicBook.com, Duchovny expressed his openness to reprising his role on the condition that Anderson should also be on board to go back.

“I don't know. I've never really considered that. For me, it was always there's no show unless it's Chris and Gillian, so I don't know. Again, I don't want to have to think about that, because it's not something that I necessarily need in my life, to go do that.” he said.

Over the years, Anderson has become much less engaged with her comeback, believing she has already played Dana to the best of her ability. Due to this, The X-Files may be revived in the future for a fresh narrative in which Duchovny would play Mulder again but without the help of his longtime companion.

In 2018, the Sex Education star said that she was finished with the franchise, confirming that she saw season 11 as her final run in The X-Files, with Carter declaring that he was hoping to continue on. However, she previously dropped hints at Variety about Scully's possible return.

Anderson explained, “It just feels like such an old idea. I’ve done it, I did it for so many years, and it also ended on such an unfortunate note. In order to even begin to have that conversation [about another season] there would need to be a whole new set of writers and the baton would need to be handed on for it to feel like it was new and progressive.”

Duchovny was solid in his decision to only come back with Scully by his side. If not, some revivals and reboots can go on without its original ensemble.

“I think at this point, I mean, there might be another iteration of the actual show without either of us. I'm not sure. Or there could be a cartoon. There are many ways to go about it. But personally, for me, the X-Files that I'm involved in consists of Chris Carter, myself, and Gillian, so I haven't spent time trying to think about a different version of that, and I don't know that I will.”
