Wonder Woman Beats Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man As The Highest Grossing Superhero Origin Movie

It looks like Wonder Woman has just beaten another box office record, taking the crown as the highest grossing superhero origin film of all time.

Though Warner Bros. didn't expect Patty Jenkin's to be as big of a hit as it is, Wonder Woman became one of the biggest superhero movies during this year's summer box office, reaching milestone after milestone during its theatrical run.

Sure expectations for Wonder Woman were lower compared to the hype for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Man of Steel, but the film came up with the strongest and leggiest run, buoyed by overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans and critics.

Now, as the film finishes its theatrical run, Forbes reports that Wonder Woman has just hit $821.74 million thanks to the international box office, surpassing Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man as the highest grossing superhero origin film ever.

That's a pretty good win for Wonder Woman, especially in this year's film market littered with comic book superhero movies. Gal Gadot's first feature film as Diana Prince is certainly turning the tide for the DC Extended Universe, and fans are eager to see whether the franchise's positive momentum will continue with Justice League.

Justice League hits cinemas on November 17, 2017.
