The Winter Soldier is arguably one of the most compelling characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we can all thank two people who are responsible for the creation of the fan-favorite anti-hero. Comic book writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting breathed new life into Captain America's trusty and oftentimes goofy sidekick Bucky Barnes when they turned him into a super-soldier assassin in 2005's Captain America #1.
However, as much as Brubaker is happy for the success the Winter Solider has been getting as of late, the renowned comic book writer is taking major issue with Marvel not paying him and Epting for the creation of the character. Expressing his frustration on the Fatman Beyond show, Brubaker claims that Marvel has only given them "thank you" credits for bringing the character to life when they should be getting guaranteed royalties for every appearance the character makes.
He explains: "I'm really happy for Sebastian Stan, who I think is both a great guy and the perfect Bucky/Winter Soldier, and I'm glad to see him getting more screen time finally. Also, Anthony Mackie is amazing as the Falcon, and everyone at Marvel Studios that I've ever met (all the way up to Kevin Feige) have been nothing but kind to me. But at the same time, for the most part, all Steve Epting and I have gotten for creating the Winter Soldier and his storyline is a 'thanks' here or there, and over the years that's become harder and harder to live with."
He also stated that he was paid more for his cameo in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Brubaker would later say that seeing promos for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier actually makes him sick. "When I see ads for [The Falcon and The Winter Soldier], it actually makes me feel sick to my stomach."
Marvel has yet to respond to Brubaker's claims but if there's any truth to the things he revealed, then the comic book company should straighten things out with them. Any way you look at it, Brubaker and Epting both deserve to get paid for creating the Winter Soldier and that's just how it goes.
