The Super Mario Bros. Movie proves to be a successful release following the news that the film just secured the biggest opening box office record for animated movies and with the numbers doing the work, is it possible to have a sequel?
As of the time of writing, there is still no confirmation from Nintendo nor Illumination whether The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is happening. Without any official announcement as regards the sequel, the viewers and fans remain hopeful about it.
If The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues with its success, it is possible that the sequel could happen. The ending and the post-credits scenes of the movie already laid down the possibility of expanding the narrative.
The CEO of Illumination, Chris Meledandri, played coy when asked by Variety whether there would be The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. While he did not confirm that there would be one, he also did not rule out its possibility.
Meledandri said, “Our focus right now is entirely on bringing the film out to the audience, and at this time, we’re not prepared to talk about what’s coming in the future… I definitely wouldn’t rule anything out.”
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a collaboration between Universal Pictures, the distributor of the movie, Nintendo, the producer of the famous game franchise, and Illumination, the production studio.
Chris Pratt who voices Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and joining him are Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently out in theaters worlwide.
